The Curious World of Cedric OlliverOne of the characters in my novel The Journey is called Cedric Olliver. Cedric is a bit of a sad case. He’s in his fifties, divorced and living with his mother. He gets easily flummoxed by human behaviour and finds people both confusing and contradictory. In the case of Bianca Caton, fellow traveller on the walking tour through New Zealand wine country, he finds her cruel and condescending.
One of Cedric’s passions is learning and remembering unusual pieces of information. He manages to weave these snippets into his everyday conversation with the skill of an artist. Over the course of the story Cedric manages to slip about fifty pieces of trivia into his exchanges with people including the fact that Cleopatra, while performing her royal duties, sometimes wore a fake beard, and that pigs are unable to look up at the sky. I loved collecting the fun facts used by Cedric and finding ways of incorporating them into the novel as The Journey progresses. So, in honour of Cedric’s love of trivia – and in order to collect some more – I decided to set up a Twitter feed to share some of what I found with the world. If you would like to be entertained on an ongoing basis by amusing but otherwise useless information click here to subscribe to my Twitter feed. You never know when some of the facts might come in handy! Click here for more information on The Journey. |
